Admiring fall colors sends a chill down our spine. The beauty of a maturing deciduous tree is unmatched. By definition, deciduous means: “shedding the leaves annually, as certain trees and shrubs.” While this time of year is the end of the life cycle for this year’s leaves, it’s also the perfect time for new life. Fall is the most popular time to plant new deciduous trees and shrubs. In this blog, we’re going to cover some basic tips for planting deciduous trees and shrubs in the fall.
Fall Planting Tips
- Watering: As with any new plant, careful watering is a must. Precipitation can come in all forms during the winter, some less helpful than others. Since you can’t necessarily rely on rainfall during the winter, water whenever appropriate. Plants should receive about an inch of water per week.
- Roots: It’s particularly important to make sure the plant’s roots get some extra TLC. The plant may not have enough time to establish a good root system before winter. To help the root system grow adequately, water, fertilize and make sure your plants get plenty of light.
- Sunlight: It is important your new tree or shrub receives ample sunlight. This means keeping up with raking and yard maintenance throughout the fall and winter. Plants produce food through sunlight, and it is the only way they will grow big and strong.
- Mulch: It is advisable to apply 2-4 inches of mulch around the base of your tree or shrub in early December to help decrease temperature fluctuations. This type of activity can be harmful to newly planted trees and shrubs. By stabilizing the temperature, you’ll give your plant a more healthy life.
