The Many Benefits of Fall Planting

Many believe that spring is the one and only time to plant and that fall marks the end of growing season. However, it is quite the contrary. Autumn is actually an ideal season for planting trees, shrubs and other plants. The key is to encourage good, quality root growth. And here at Root’s Nurseries, we know all about that. We are the experts in landscaping for Landisville and surrounding areas and we look forward to telling you all about why now is a great time to plant.

September through November is the ideal time for tree planting because it allows the roots to become established before the ground freezes and winter sets in. However, it is highly recommended that you do not continue planting trees too late into the fall because this could have a negative effect on plant health. Planting trees and shrubs in fall enables the root systems to grow before the hot summer returns and get a head start over shrubs in the spring. Larger plants planted now will also get a head start since a general rule of thumb is one year per inch of trunk diameter.

Cooler, moist weather of fall is perfect for tree planting because with an increase in rainfall and cooler temperatures, less watering is needed. As tree shoot growth halts, the trees require less water because the days are cooler and shorter and the rate of photosynthesis decreases. Stable air temperatures also promote rapid root development. Soil stays warm well after the air temperature cools, continuing to encourage root growth. And, trees establish roots in new locations before warm weather stimulates top growth. There are so many great benefits to fall planting! Some more include:

  • Trees are better equipped to deal with heat and drought come summer
  • You can pick your trees and shrubs by the fall color they produce
  • The ground is still soft enough for planting
  • Easier to choose location amongst other plant growth when flourishing

Ready to get started? Some tree species that are recommended for fall planting include the Maple, London Planetree, Tulip Poplar, Zelkova and Serviceberry, Honey Locust, Crabapple, Spruce, Pine, Sycamore, Linden, Elm, and more.

And remember, selecting trees locally grown ensures hardiness of plants because the field grown tree is acclimated to local weather conditions including rainfall, snow, cold and hot extremes. Our landscaping company is the area tree experts with more than 100 acres of trees!
